What is interval training and why is it so good?
In our search for the most effective fat burning exercises for men, we often look for particular exercises, movements or routines to include in our fitness workout plan. While individual exercises are good, perhaps the best thing to look at is the type of training you are using overall.
What is interval training good for?
There are countless methods to train with obviously the most popular being cardio (running and using machines like the stepper, treadmill, elliptical and of course the stationary bike) and weightlifting workouts which can include free weights, resistance machines, power band systems and body-weight workouts using them all individually or as part of the popular circuit training workouts.
All these methods have the potential to work and work well however there is a style of training that supercharges these traditional methods giving you much better results in a quicker amount of time – welcome to the world of Interval Training Workouts!
What is interval training defined as?
Interval training routines are fast becoming recognized as being the most effective and time efficient workouts available today, helping people (especially busy people) blast away fat, lose weight and get fit. Interval workouts are also sometimes called HIIT workouts which stands for High Intensity Interval Training Workouts.
For many years, people have preached about the “Fat Burning Zone” where you calculate the simple formula of around 220 minus your age to get your ultimate fat burning beats per minute. The idea then was to train at a level of intensity that would keep your heart rate up and static at that particular rate for a time anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes and this would result in fat loss. That theory certainly works but by adding interval training to the mix you will achieve even better results.
So c’mon already! What is interval training?!
Interval training is a supercharged version of cardio training. It is extremely effective, wildly efficient and can be used by fit people to help them lose fat faster.
This training method when broken down to its purest foundations is simply alternating periods of hard exercise followed by a period of easier exercise, sometimes called “active rest.” A fantastic feature of interval training is that it is totally adaptable to suit virtually any workout.
An example would be walking fast for 30 seconds followed by walking slower for 90 seconds then back to a faster pace for 30 seconds and so on. Spin classes are a great user of interval training concepts where you increase the cycling intensity for 30 seconds and then slow down for a minute or longer.
For best results, it is best to perform 3-6 intervals per training session. This will help you burn more calories during and after exercise.
So hopefully by now you should be able to define exactly what is interval training and see just how easy it is to add the concept of interval training routines to any of your workouts or activities. Be it walking, running, using exercise machines such as the bike, treadmill or stepper, boxing and sparring or even playing basketball, all you have to do is vary your intensity so that your heart rate gets up to maximum and is then followed by that active rest period. Then get your heart rate back up again!
Although the basic concept is simple, it certainly helps to have a totally planned workout program that is based on using interval training workouts and designed specifically to make sure that they are done right.
